Yusef salaam punching the air5/28/2023 ![]() Although Punching the Air is not based on Salaam's experience of racial profiling, “Amal’s character is inspired by him as an artist and as an incarcerated teen who had the support of his family, read lots of books, and made art to keep his mind free.” Zoboi and Salaam met at Hunter College in 1999, two years before Salaam was exonerated for allegedly assaulting and raping a woman in Manhattan's Central Park. It has also won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature and the Walter Dean Myers Award. Surprisingly, on the first page Wragg Sykes informs us that she will not introduce us to the scholars who have worked in the field over the past ninety years, because “there simply wasn’t the space to mention the names and affiliations of researchers for every site or piece of information.” To my astonishment, the book is also entirely unreferenced. Kindred by the archaeologist Rebecca Wragg Sykes is a dense work, packed with information and interpretations that strongly challenge earlier conceptions of Neanderthals. This transformation has been driven partly by new discoveries in archaeology, some of which are truly astonishing, but also by changing societal attitudes about how we depict others. ![]() ![]() ![]() But over the past few years the Neanderthals of our imaginations have evolved marvelously, so that recent images closely resemble us (the Neanderthal woman in the Museum of the Confluences, Nice, with her direct gaze, is a prime example). If you visit an even moderately old museum display on human evolution, or open anything but the latest textbooks on the subject, you’ll encounter cave-dwelling, mammoth-hunting Neanderthals who are beetle-browed, stooped, and distinctly unintelligent-looking. ![]() A model of a Neanderthal male in his twenties on display at the Natural History Museum, London, 2014 ![]() The locked room elly5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() "Galloway is an everywoman, smart, successful and a little bit unsure of herself. I guess 7th and 8th grade readers who are reading the gritty books allready and can get this one at the public library would be the prime audience. So I don't know who the audience really is. It's also a bit odd because the character is so young, but I don't know how many middle school libraries could really carry it and I don't know if older teens would read about the addictions of a 7th grader. ![]() But adults will see the many faults that are in the book. ![]() I can see readers who love gritty realistic fiction devouring this one. It starts with loosening your grip, accepting risk, trusting your people, and giving them space to do what they do best. Catmull also emphasizes the role of leadership in cultivating creativity.
